Silver Strikers Ladies were on Saturday crowned maiden champions of the National Bank of Malawi Women’s Premiership.
The Bankers Ladies put the icing on the cake on the final day of the season by beating FCB Nyasa Big Bullets Women 2-1.
Silver Strikers Ladies won the league in Match Week 15, with three games to play after beating Kukoma Ntopwa Queens 3-0.
On Saturday, the side had to come from behind with goals by Ireen Khumalo and Wezzie Mvula.
The guests were first to score at 38 minutes after Chimwemwe Sapangwa beat Ireen Sibande in goals. Silver Ladies responded through Khumalo on the penalty spot.
The two sides went to recess one all.
In the second half, the hosts piled on more pressure, and it was no surprise when Wezi Mvula snatched the lead in the 63rd minute.
Two minutes later, Carol Mathyola was introduced as Yamikani Mhango’s replacement.
The visitors tried to return in the match but could not find a second goal.
In the added time, Madyina Nguluwe paved the way for Linda Manda.
After the match, Head Coach Andrew Chikhosi said it was an intense match that did not depict the picture that his side had already won the league.
“It was a difficult game that we made it twist like that on our own, as you saw we started very well, but gave them space to score, and that made life difficult for ourselves. However, the girls fought for the win and got it. It was a good run in the league, we fought well in the first round and that did it for us,” said Chikhosi.
Silver Strikers Ladies has finished the season with 48 points from 18 games, winning 16 times. The side lost only twice and did not share spoils even once.
