Silver Strikers had to score six times to cut the gap against FCB Nyasa Big Bullets and Mighty Wanderers to six points. The two Blantyre teams are first and second on the log table and are tied at 59 points each.
With the win on Sunday, Silver Strikers sit third on the standings with 53 points.
A brace from McDonald Lameck, and a goal each by Emmanuel Allan, Festus Duwe, Uchizi Vunga, and Zebron Kalima is what Silver Strikers needed to continue with their perfect run in the TNM Super League.
Allan scored the first goal of the match at 18 minutes when he headed home a corner taken by Duwe. Eight minutes later, Lameck scored his first goal for the day when he received a defense-splitting pass from Vunga, who got the ball in midfield and launched an attack.
Despite several chances, the Central Bankers went to recess with only two goals up.
Come second half, Charles Chipala and Nickson Mwase both had their own chances at the 52nd and 56th minutes respectively, but their efforts failed to turn into goals. Chipala paved way for Lassuli Jali at 67 minutes.
Two minutes later, Jali got involved in a goal scored by Duwe when he received a pass from Lameck and tried to score by tipping the ball over the keeper, but the effort hit the post and went straight to Duwe, who scored the third goal of the match.
The fourth goal came at 75 minutes when Duwe picked up the pieces after a long ball was sent forward and picked Vunga, who took a shot with his first touch to put the ball in the back of the net.
At 78 minutes, the Area 47 outfit made three changes, bringing in Felix Dumakude, Levison Maganizo, and Dan Sandukila, and taking out Uchizi Vunga, Chikondi Kamanga, and Nickson Mwase.
At 83 minutes, Duwe was substituted for Ernest Petro. Two minutes later, referee Easter Zimba awarded Silver Strikers a penalty after Laston Pingeni cleared the ball on the line with his hand. Pingeni was shown a red card, and Lameck scored the preceding penalty.
In added time, Kalima scored the sixth goal of the match after Jali dribbled past two defenders and opened up Kalima, who never made a mistake but converted the chance into a goal.
After the match, First Assistant Coach Mapopa Kent Msukwa said the result of the match was attributed to the players who listened to their instructions.
“A wonderful game, the players played according to instructions, and this is the result we wanted. We are still taking a game at a time, and we will now look at how we are going to take on Ekhaya on Wednesday. As Silver Strikers, we feel we are on track, and we feel the league is still open”, said Msukwa.
Duwe was voted as the Man of the Match after providing two assists and a goal.
Next, Silver Strikers will travel to Blantyre to face Ekhaya FC at Mpira Stadium on Wednesday.
