The wait is slowly coming to an end when we will set the wheels of the 2024 football season running with a date in the Charity Shield.

The FAM Charity Shield was introduced in 2016 not only as a curtain raiser to the season but also Football Association of Malawi flagship Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) program which aims at mobilizing the football fraternity and the public to raise funds and awareness towards a charitable cause of national significance.

The winner of the top flight league face off with the winner in the national championship cup.

This year, Silver Strikers for finishing as runners up in the 2023 TNM Superleague will play FCB Nyasa Big Bullets at Bingu National Stadium in Lilongwe.

Statistics favor the “quadruple” winners who have never missed a single Charity Shield fixture since its inception and are the only winners this far.

The Area 47 outfit, has featured in this Corporate Social Responsibility game twice, both losing to FCB Nyasa Big Bullets. (1-0 in 2022 and 3-0 in 2018).

On Saturday, FCB Nyasa Big Bullets and Silver Strikers will face off for the third time and a few statistics are at risk of being broken and setting new ones. Those statistics set the hype for the first game of the 2024 season.

During the first two years in 2016 and 2017, the Shield was a one-day, two-team event involving the League champions and the National Cup Winners. In 2018 the format was changed as the competition was now a two-day event that involved four teams who were the previous season’s Champions of the elite Competitions.
