A 20th minute strike from forward Stain Davie was enough for the Central Bankers to go on the summit of the TNM Super league. This is Davie’s seventh goal of the season.
The Bankers got a hard earned three points against Kamuzu Barracks on Sunday after the team started the game on a high note by pressing the hosts in their own half as Tatenda M’balaka, Davie and Chimwemwe Idana controlled possession.
It was not a surprise that after five minutes Silver Strikers was awarded several corners.
The dominant display by the Bankers paid dividends on the 20th minute after Davie tapped into the net a well taken pass from Idana who had a very exciting afternoon.
Minutes later, Idana and Duncan Nyoni showed some flowery football by exchanging beautiful shot passes on the left side of the field which pleased fired up Silver Strikers fans.
In the dying minutes of the first half, the hosts could have leveled the scores as a long ball found Kelvin Hanganda in the box but Charles Thom came to the rescue.
In the second half, Kamuzu Barracks raised the tempo of their game to get themselves an equaliser but the Central Bankers stood strong. The hosts made several changes in the second half by bringing in Matias Nyirenda, Samson Chiponda, Olson Kanjira and Levison Maganizo for Alexander Cosmas, Nelson Kangunje, Redson Nkhoma and Patrick Banda but to no avail.
On the part of the Central Bankers, Chisomo Mpachika came in for Nyoni.
At the end of regulations time, Silver Strikers FC came out victors to reach 18 points, one ahead of FCB Nyasa Big Bullets.
Speaking to the media after the match, head coach Hendrikus Pieter de Jongh said the game had two faces as his team played very well and on the other end the opponents came knocking but his charges defended the goal very well.
“We played very well today, we kept possession and created alot of chances which some we failed to turn into goals. Thats football, overall we have won.”, said De Jongh.
On his team being the only unbeaten side this far in the league, the gaffar said it’s just eight games into the league and there is a long way to go.
“I am not too excited about it. I am the same and i think we are on the right track. We have only played eight games and we are a long way to the end therefore we will see how it goes. We take one game at a time”, he said.
As it is, Silver Strikers FC has maintained its unbeaten record and play MAFCO next weekend at Bingu National Stadium.
Idana, was voted FOL Player of the match.
