Silver Strikers will this weekend play old-age rivals Civil Service United at the Silver Stadium in the TNM super league after a two-week break from league activity.
Silver was not given games as it had 3 contributed players to the national team which is participating at the Confederation of Southern African Football Associations (COSAFA) tournament in South Africa.
But in a twist of events the Silver has been given a fixture to fulfill by the league despite cancelling the same fixture two weeks ago due to National team engagements by Silver Striker’s players who are three in number and still with the national team namely; Mark Fodya, Maxwell Phodo and Nixon Mwase.
With the Lilongwe skyblues preparing for the Lilongwe derby, Chief Executive Officer Thoko Chimbali has called on the Superleague to change regulation that stipulates that clubs must be exempted from league duties after contributing 4 players to the national team.
“The impact of a single player to a team maybe as huge as the impact of three or more players to a team as such other teams may be at a disadvantage if the league continues to be played’’, said Chimbali.
The Silver CEO further added that bearing in mind that the national team takes the best of the best players and uprooting such players from their clubs brings in a deficiency to a club that has contributed the player. The best case scenario would be to change the rules and regulations to completely halt the league during national team engagements.
Meanwhile the capital city derby is this Saturday on the 17th July as fans will not be allowed as part of the national covid-19 restrictions imposed by government as cases have been on the rise in the country.
